fun without the adverse and perverse
So I set out on a journey into the heart of darkness
In a bid to be rid of evil and iniquity once and for all
<span a lifetime and ended in Hades
There I met Persephone, her beauty - strange and awesome
A symbol of life and vitality - subjected to bondage <br things, time and events change

When in fact, it is merely us that change?

I join myself to the throng of ‘deceived’ humanity

To say, time has changed and the un-revolving timepiece

Has chimed a new day, a new year and a new beginning

It is easier or maybe just better to believe the latter

For it propels a greater change within, providing an impetus to synchronize with time

Taking the opportunity of rebirth; to start again and live a new life

So my friends welcome to 2011

A year redolent with promise and filled with possibilities

Let us learn to dream again and thus, to live again

Refuse to go down in obscurity and in darkness

Let the light shine in your heart as you rise to believe the endless possibilities

Locked up in your inside

Rise and shine for this is your year to show that you have something

That can outlast time

Something that will keep ticking when the hands of time stops for you

For indeed you are the un-revolving timepiece, keeping time even when time is no more

Rise and take your place in history

Happy New scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Management'/>
Building a Dynamic Enterprise

What makes an organization different? What makes some perform in exceptional manners while others lag behind? Why do some organizations recognize patterns in the environment and change accordingly to leverage on the possibilities in their environment? Why do some organizations shape the future while some others remain in the twilight of yesterday’s success?
So many writers, business philosophers and management gurus have postulated different theories at different times as to how organizations can achieve notoriety and become successful.
Tom Peters was launched into the limelight as a business iconoclast and revolutionary thinker by his seminal work on some highly successful companies documented in his book, In Search of Excellence which he co-wrote with Bob Waterman. Jim Collins won for himself a place on the bookshelf of any serious Chief Executive or management student by writing the book ‘Built to last’ which explored what he called “Successful Habits of Visionary Companies”. Pundits using different media have attempted to unravel what special features companies have that make them different and I will attempt to codify this as I explore for myself and others like me who are interested in organizational effectiveness. I have developed a framework which I am calling the 7C framework of successful companies.

Clarity of Vision
Organizations that are successful usually have an overarching sense of vision and a commitment to a purpose that is vividly and clearly articulated in a way and manner that excites employee commitment and buy-in. Disney’s vision is simply to make people laugh and they have this well communicated to all their employees. James C. Collins captured this well when he wrote that “Great companies are guided by a core ideology - core values and sense of purpose beyond just making money.”
There must be an emotional investment from employees into a business that goes beyond making a living if we are to see their creativity blossom and if we are to see any action that requires them to go beyond the call of duty.

Creativity and Freedom of Expression
Another important feature in successful organization is their ability to support and engender creativity and freedom of expression. This is captured in Semco’s business philosophy which gives employees utmost responsibility for their action and for deciding their work schedule and production capacity; even up to setting their own performance bonuses (Child, 2005:396). Semco has had phenomenal successes based on the atmosphere of flexibility and personal freedom it provides for employees. A lot of other organizations have attributed their success to this principle of flexibility and promotion of innovation. Google is just one such company whose growth over the last couple of years has become one of the much talked about business stories. Johnson and Johnson, though a big corporation maintains what Tom Peters calls a ‘flexible collection of smallish, risk taking accountable enterprises’ (Peters, 1992:471).

Communication
This is a recurrent feature of organizations that are built to last and conditioned to succeed. Knowledge workers thrive in an atmosphere where the free flow of information is practiced. Whenever an organization supports free and un-hampered communication, individuals feel empowered to make decisions and to participate in decision making within the organization. Semco for instance has a free information policy. The free flow of communication however needs to be carefully managed to prevent disgruntled employees of misusing corporate information.

Cross functional interaction
The hierarchical and functional divide within an organization is a serious impediment to growth and productivity; organizations who want to remain competitive in an hypercompetitive environment will of a necessity find a way and a means to work across functional lines and circumvent ‘normal’ reporting structures to be able to respond to change and leverage on opportunities. Again, Semco is one such example and Southwest Airline, another company regarded by many analysts to be a successfully run organizations has also attempted to blur functional lines and hierarchical demarcations with unparalleled success in the process -at least in the airline industry (Child, 2005:398).

Coordination and Control
In an environment of absolute freedom and self expression, where flexibility and responsiveness is the watchword, there is a pernicious tendency to easily veer off track and deviate from the core of the business. Organizations therefore ought to be able to keep the main things the main things by entrenching a culture of accountability and responsibility. Performance measurement and appraisals are key to making sure freedom does not become license and that flexibility does not become chaos.
Alvin Toffler noted in his book Across the Board that “human beings were held accountable long before there were corporate bureaucracies. If the knight didn’t deliver, the king cut off his head.” This makes the case for accountability transcending any form of organizational style.

Customer focus
Another recurrent feature in organizations with outstanding performances is an unflinching devotion and dedication to their customers, not just an attention to their present needs but a keen attention to their probable and future needs. They map out their customers and serve not just apparent needs and wants but even the subliminal wanting of an amorphous appetite as it were. Disney has a unique customer orientation and focus with a “business concept focused on the creation of superb customer episodes, starting in the parking lot.” (Peters, 1992:741). This customer focus is responsible for Disneys’ success and many others like Disney.

Change responsive
The one constant thing now is change but more than that, change itself is changing both in the nature and rate of it. Any organization that wants to succeed into the future must be sufficiently responsive in its structure and style of conducting business to make change easy and feasible. Organizations are now arranged to respond and leverage on change. McKinsey, clearly one of the best companies in the US today is one that maintains a fluidity that helps it not only respond to change but help other companies respond effectively to change as well. Tom Peters asserts that their fluidity is due to the relative absence of hierarchy (Peters, 1992:146) but I dare say it is not as simplistic as that. It is the creative integration of all the seven points above that ultimately impacts on a company the ability to change and remain successful even when present business conditions changes.

References
1. The nature of man is so corrupted that he gravitates towards the base, the mundane and the mingy. Oh the misery of Adam... Massa Damnata!!!” Dr. Frenzo

“Great men exist that there may be greater men” Bro Beckson (Spoken, lived and demonstrated by a true mentor and friend)

“The great man lives in several bodies; and writes, or paints, or acts, by many hands; and after some time, it is not easy to say what is the authentic work of the master, and what is only of his school.” R.W. Emerson

“A truly Great man is a man of diverse affinities. He transcends all knowledge and gathers into himself the expansive works of arts and science without laying claim to any form of absolute realism.” Dr. Frenzo

As I write these quotations, majority original; I recall a friend who does not like quotations but he forgets that every book is a quotation; and every house is a quotation out of all forests, and mines, and stone quarries; and every man is a quotation from all his ancestors. The very sentimental gush ‘I hate quotable quotes’ itself a mere repetitive quotation of some other man’s incongruous sentiments. This perpetual transfer of ideas, traits and concepts is the basis of all quotations.

“I have never been fortunate enough to meet someone who comprehends me but I have been blessed with many who understand me.” Dr Frenzo

“The lure of Knowledge, the glory of Wisdom and the appeal of Genius all conspire against my soul and physical comfort beckoning in a certain direction to thread the road less travelled.” Dr. Frenzo

“The culmination of my mental powers is always at such a time when night converges with day, evil conflicts with good; apathy interacts with passion and the human confluences with the divine. The solar and stellar creation of an infinite mind juxtaposed to birth the perceptive powers of a finite soul.” Dr. Frenzo

“I hear the wind call my name, I feel the ocean beckon, I see light in distant horizons, I taste the pleasures of faraway places and I perceive the aroma of heaven.” Frenzo

“True civilization is a transition from blind, imperceptible, lame force to the progressive accuracy of skill, truth and beauty. Supreme beauty is the absolute reality of virtue and felicity born out of a once defiled and blackened soul.” Frenzo-Emerson Mix

True Genius cannot be stopped, hampered or hindered. It can be repressed, delayed, concealed and stifled but it must always be expressed. It might be for an audience of one or perhaps of none but it must be displayed. It may go unappreciated and uncelebrated but it still must be showcased. Take the lid off, you player haters and celebrate the gift of Genius!!! Dr Frenzo

“I once wrote of intellectual timidity and a lack of mental curiosity that engenders a lobotomised civilization. My search leads me to the conclusion that what we need for civilization to thrive is the persuasion that we must search out what we do not know and seek to discover the riches that lie beyond the limits of our knowledge. In so doing, we become braver, better, brighter and broader than those that will not seek knowledge and we develop a more appealing society. Our position in life will be secured by our passion to create our own reality and not a mere passive acceptance of reality.” Dr. Frenzo

By considering nature and surveying the circles of heavenly intelligence, we might more properly align our own intelligence though demented and unbalanced when compared with celestial genius but remain allied to their circulations; and that, having thus learned, and being naturally possessed of a correct reasoning faculty, we might, by imitating the uniform revolutions of divinity, set right our own wanderings and blunders. Frenzo cum Plato

“What modern man fails to recognise is that all things are symbolical; and what we call results are mere beginnings and beckonings from the future which come to tantalise our imagination into the pursuit of yet greater accomplishments.” Dr. Frenzo

“The organic expansions of our lives into the invisible eons of other minds bring into our own horizon the unexplored universe of other souls hence the good, the beauty and the possibilities that lie therein but also exposes us to the dangers, the deceits and the deviousness of these souls. We all must learn to modulate our interaction with other souls and adopt only that which is good and noble.” Dr. Frenzo

“For those who have embraced timelessness, they live in the perpetual NOW and will continue to live even after Time is no more. Let us strive to enter into the Timelessness of Eternal Bliss, now and in the hereafter. The race against time lives us all with the mark of time emblazoned on the jacket of our mortality which is but a casing for the immortality that we carry deep within. Do we dare let the corruption of mortality diminish the incorruptible immortal that we are?”

More to come at a later date!!!

Operations Strategy: Reconciling Customers’ Requirement and Operations Resources

One of the most basic principles of economics comes to play in our study of Operations Management. It is the principle of “Scarcity” which suggests that there are usually limited resources to produce the demands and wants of society. The basic notion of scarcity has given rise to other economic principles such as choice and opportunity cost, resource allocation, theory of production etc. Same as in economics, Operations Strategy is being influenced by the idea of market demand or market requirement and the capabilities of operations resources. These two views together with other perspectives that have been articulated should be examined in tandem to give a holistic view of Operations Strategy (Slack, Chambers & Johnston, 2007: 63).

The Market Requirements perspective of operations strategy is based on the economic concept that place demand at the centre of all economic activities. Market requirements which is a composite of demands is what will trigger the production process and hence determine not only the input into the production process but also the production process which in operations management will include both the strategic and operational aspects of operations. If a firm does not know what its’ customer requirements are, then the operations will be focused on achieving the wrong performance objectives but if the market requirements are known, then proper emphasis will be given to the appropriate performance objective. The iphone which is regarded as the most successful gadget in recent times thrive on the Apple store which provides numerous Apps variety to subscribers thereby helping to grow the uptake and ‘stickiness’ of the iphone. The operations of Apple store therefore must be flexible enough to churn out and integrate as many applications as possible into its store. The Apple store has over 85,000 applications at the moment and over 2 Billion applications have been downloaded to date (Beta News: 2009). Nokia which for a long time has focused its performance objective on quality and dependability is beginning to lose market share to Apple and Blackberry based on the variety that these other products provide (Engadget: 2009). Determining market requirements helps the operations function to determine what its competitive factors are and these are then mapped to the operation’s performance objectives (Slack, Chambers & Johnston,2007: 68) as a key to organizational competitive advantage.

The Resource-Based perspective as opposed to the market requirement perspective maintains that knowing the market requirement in and by itself cannot be the reason for the evolution of a strategic operations position but that the capabilities and competence of the resource within an organization is what confers on the organization sustainable competitive advantage (Slack, Chambers & Johnston,2007: 73).This view is in keeping with the concept of core competence postulated by Gary Hamel and C.K. Prahalad and hinges on the fact that competitive advantage is achieved by the nature and quality of skills and abilities within an organization and how they are deployed in the activities and processes of the organization(Johnson etal, 2008: 97). The constraints and capabilities of the operations resources therefore determine its strategic positioning and the performance objective. Microsoft for instance is aware of the change in computing trends from the traditional PC to mobile devices (PDAs, Smart phones, Netbooks and now Cloud books) but it has huge resource constraints and has not been able to deliver a good enough product on the mobile platform. Google however, having always played in the web application and mobile space has capitalised on this trend to release the Android operating system which is now the biggest news in mobile computing and is been positioned to be an iphone killer. Why is Microsoft slow to respond while Google seem to be moving at the “speed of thought”? Simply put; the capabilities of their resources: Microsoft engineers have always built heavy desktop applications and therefore their operation is configured along the lines of its resources and a shift in market requirements has not caused any remarkable shift in operational performance or core competence for Microsoft.

When considered independently, the merits of the two arguments are apparent and depending on one’s frame of mind or perspective, one might favour one over the other. The human resource specialist might favour the resource based perspective, so is the finance person. A marketing professional or an economist on the other hand might favour the market requirement perspective. The reality however is that both perspectives are true and different sides of the same coin. The resources of a firm determine the present capability of the organization but market requirements will necessitate operational re-arrangement and a shift in performance objectives. Microsoft was a late comer to the web but it has managed to capture a fair share of the online business by restructuring and repositioning its resources to deliver on the shift in market requirement. For an effective operations strategy to be evolved, the operations function must keep in view market sentiments and requirement and align its resources to deliver on identified competitive factors. This is a sure way to remain effective and efficient not just in the moment but into the future.

References:
Beta News (2007), The virtual mega-mart: Apple's oversized App Store. Words convey the meaning in the human mind and heart both to the one who speaks and to those who listen. Our words are enunciated by and through our breath, conferring on them the quality of life and the essence of the being who speaks. Our words convey to the exterior our internal realities and through our words we live and give expression to the meaning in our souls. Words are potent and powerful!
Words have altered my life and set me on the path I tread today. I surround and immerse myself in words all day, words from sages across all ages. From Moses to David, from Socrates to Nietzsche, from Jesus to Billy Graham, from Muhammad to Ghamidi, from Homer to Eliot. These people fill my world with words and through their words I create my own world.
Allow me to give you a dose of some of the words and expressions that have impacted my life and set me on a different path:

“Fear not that your life shall come to an end, but rather that it shall never have a beginning.” John Henry Newman.

“Don’t wait! You will end up waiting forever…..jump into the Now!” Clyde Reid

“Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.” Will Rogers

“The tragedy in Life is that most people spend their entire lives indefinitely preparing to live.” Paul Tournier.

“Nothing will ever be attempted if all the possible objections must first be overcome.” Samuel Johnson.

“Most people go to their graves with their music still in them.” Oliver Wendell Holmes.

“The great tragedy of today’s convenient world is that you can live a trivial life and get away with it.” Tim Hansel.

“Free is the man that wills without caprice.” Martin Buber.

“The man to whom freedom is guaranteed, does not feel oppressed by causality” Martin Buber.

“Our dream, when pursued, is the most likely predictor of our future.” Maxwell.

“The great thing in life is not so much where we are but in what direction we are moving.” Oliver Wendell Holmes.

“We live under the same sky, but we don’t all have the same horizon” Konrad Adenaur.

“Cherish your visions and your dreams as they are the children of your soul; the blueprint of your ultimate achievements.” Napoleon Hill.

“Ah, great it is to believe the dream,
As we stand in youth by the starry stream.
But a greater thing is to live life through,
And say at the end, the dream came true.” Maxwell.

“Nothing great will ever be achieved without great men, and men are great only if they are determined to be so.” Charles De Gaulle.

“Making a true decision means committing to achieving a result and then cutting yourself off from any other possibility.” Anthony Robbins.

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” Helen Keller.

“Your decisions, not your conditions determine your destiny. “ Anthony Robbins.

I will continue at a later time but I hope these few words have inspired someone to give life meaning by invoking the will and powers locked up in the deep recesses of the human soul.

“A Mind once stretched by a great idea or new understanding will never fully return to its original dimensions.” William James.

Virtual and Conventional Organizations: A Differential Analysis

A virtual organization is a mental and imaginary representation of organizational reality that goes beyond the conventional boundaries of a rational or logical organization. It transcends legal identities, organizational structures and models to focus on the collective activities binding the organization. A conventional organization on the other hand is bound within the confines of physical representation with clearly defined hierarchical and bureaucratic structures, established decision making processes and well defined roles, rules and procedures.
The differences between conventional and virtual organizations are immense and fundamental to our understanding of the two forms of organizations. I will attempt to explore these differences under three (3) categories:

Structural Differences

• Physical Structure: Virtual organizations lack a physical structure and exist as an amorphous and imaginary reality in the mind of people using the cyber space as a means of operation while conventional organizations are defined by tangible assets, office space and actual people you can see and touch.
• Geography: Virtual organizations are boundary-less and inclusive whereas conventional organizations are confined to one or more geographical locations and memberships are on an exclusive basis.
• Mobility: Workers in virtual organizations are mobile and not confined because of the availability of a communication infrastructure (the internet, extranet and organizational portals) that allows members to contribute regardless of where they are.
• Flexibility: Conventional organizations have a rigid structure of hierarchy, bureaucracy, rules and regulations that do not allow for flexibility and responsiveness but virtual organizations are built around people that form the organization.

Operational Differences

The operational differences between conventional and virtual organization is mainly in the area of processes and management; Child, J (2005:202-203).
• Communication: Though this is part of any organizational management task it takes a different form in virtual organizations. The sophistication required to maintain effective communication in a virtual organization is higher than that required in a conventional one mainly due to the fact that the virtual organization is composed of various quasi-independent units.
• Assessment: Virtual organizations require frequent and continuous assessment of goals and corporate objective than conventional organizations.
• Learning: Virtual organizations relies on ‘knowledge assets’ more than they do on tangible physical assets, Child J(2005:203) and therefore require a more elaborate and sophisticated even intensive learning and knowledge management system.

Strategic Differences

There are strategic considerations in the allocation of scarce resources that also point to fundamental differences between a virtual organization and a conventional organization. Such differences are in the areas of:
• People Management: Virtual organizations thrive on the competence of the people who comprise the organization; as such managers in virtual organizations are more sensitive and responsive and adopt more sophisticated HRM techniques and systems than those in conventional organizations.
• Relationship Management: The integrated network of people, processes, suppliers, vendors and partners is a key element of virtual organizations and as such managers of virtual organizations take more care to nurture and support the elaborate network of people an d firm interaction that exist in a virtual environment.
• Knowledge Management: The transfer of both codified and un-codified knowledge presents a serious challenge to the continued success of the virtual organization. For knowledge transfer to happen effectively, then an appropriate system has to be instituted to facilitate and ensure the sharing of both structured and unstructured forms of knowledge. Child, J (2005:211).
• Technology Management: It is difficult, perhaps un-imaginable to discuss the concept of a virtual organization without reference to ICT and technology infrastructure required to make this possible. The technology consideration is on the network design, information flow and processes, IT infrastructure such as VOIP, teleconferencing, document sharing etc. Bernhard K (1998:3)

In conclusion, there are many differences between virtual and conventional forms of organization but the essential difference is that where conventional organizations is the aggregation of factors of production (people, physical assets, etc); virtual organization is the coordination of disparate and dispersed factors of production for the creation of value. And suffice it to say that any organization desirous of remaining effective and profitable must adopt a model that allows them to manage virtuality because in the next couple of years all things will be virtual.

References
Child, J. F. Drucker and it refers to someone who works primarily with information or one who develops and uses knowledge in the workplace. Knowledge workers are employed, not for their physical or ‘visible’ contribution to production but to the possession of tacit and implicit knowledge which in turns impacts on the productivity of the firm. Knowledge workers are those who posses the ability not just to use knowledge but to create, capture, transfer and mobilize knowledge to create value for themselves or for the organization they work for.

These are the people who through the sheer use of brain power rather than brute force create market possibilities and foster innovation and value creation for their employers; through their ceaseless interaction with knowledge they create economic value. What they sell is their know-how and competence; the only property they care about is intellectual property while their investment capital is their intellectual capital. I know a couple of young men who have no means or wealth as we know it but who through the exercise of their mind and the channeling of their intellectual capital, have come to own equity stakes in big corporations.

Charles Handy in his book, The Age of Paradox pointed out that ‘Focused intelligence, the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and know-how is the new source of wealth’. Handy Charles (1994:18-9). He also made it clear that organizations who want to continue to survive and thrive would need to find a means to attract, retain and leverage intellectual capital to serve the need of the organization. It is a general position amongst economist and organizational theorists that we now operate a knowledge economy where the ability to create and leverage on new knowledge is more important than maintaining the status quo. The question is how are organizations to position themselves with this new economic reality where wealth is mainly entrenched in the brains of the workers than in the corporate bank account or asset register?

For organizations to leverage effectively on the expertise and creativity of knowledge workers, they need to provide an enabling environment and structure for these categories of workers. What are the essentials that an organization must put in place to provide a suitable environment for the burgeoning numbers of knowledge workers in the workplace?

Organizational Culture: The organization culture can be described as a pattern of basic assumptions which an organization has come to adopt as the ‘correct’ way of doings things or of perceiving issues and which they seek to entrench by indoctrinating new members to think, feel and perceive issues according to those basic assumptions. Schein, D. 1985.
The basic assumptions held by a knowledge driven organization must be one of positivity and of finding answers to problems without necessarily having to follow a set of rules or rigid formula. Individual freedom must be allowed and the culture must be conducive to the growth of ambition, equality and intellectual distinction.

Organizational Structure: The structure of the organization cannot be rigidly hierarchical, the best structure for a knowledge driven organization is one that embraces the principles of federalism and subsidiarity by allowing for the existence of teams, small units and ad-hoc/ project teams that allows for speed and agility in the creation and transfer of knowledge. This is based on the simple psychological theory that in a small group, the knowledge worker’s fear of anonymity is cancelled and he can self actualize easily. The horizontal organization is an example of a structure that allows this to happen. Handy Charles (1994:139). The freshness of working with different people at different times and being able to focus on varied tasks presents a possibility for innovation to the knowledge worker and also presents an opportunity to grow as a person.

Organizational Learning: For a knowledge worker to remain productive in the context of an organization two things must be present, one, there must be an opportunity for the worker to continue growing and learning. Individual growth and learning must be seen as a possibility, else the worker being the knowledgeable person that he is, will discover that what he knows will soon become obsolete, hence his worth will significantly diminish once that happens. So a key consideration for knowledge workers is the opportunities that exist for training and personal development. I have interviewed over a hundred managers in the last two years alone and one thing they all have in common before taking up an engagement is the opportunity for training. The only exemptions to these are executive management employees and this is perhaps based on the assumption that it will be their role to create such opportunities, not only for themselves but for others in the organization as well.

Apart from the opportunity for individual training and development, another key consideration for knowledge workers is the institution of knowledge management practice within an organization. For knowledge workers to remain creative, the organizational processes must support knowledge creation, knowledge capturing, knowledge transfer and knowledge mobilization. There are technology platforms that help to do this, there must be an institution of policies, processes and procedures to support and give life to the system. A knowledge management is essential because an organization is not only concerned with the exploration of new possibilities but also wants a mechanism to fully exploit the benefits of existing knowledge. Child, J. (2005:39)

Reward and Compensation: The compensation and reward of the knowledge worker is another important consideration. Knowledge workers want to be compensated based on the value of their contribution and not merely based on a salary structure. They want to know what their ideas, concepts and innovations are worth and whenever there is a huge disparity between their perceived worth and their actual worth based on their compensation, they become dissatisfied, de-motivated and disillusioned. The organization therefore ought to establish and entrench a culture and practice of meritocracy.

As the global economy changes, the accelerative thrust of change taking us all to unimagined horizons and heights; only those who have the know how and the competencies required to create, sustain and manage change will be able to survive the new economy and only organizations who have learnt to use and manage such individuals (knowledge workers) will continue to exist. In the words of Tom Peters, it will be a true case of ‘distinct or extinct’.

References
1. Humans have learnt to survive as an independent entity but also as a corporate and cultural phenomenon. Organization is human’s way of making sense of her environmental reality with the awareness that we can do more together than we can do alone. However, organizations, like humans are not static, they are constantly changing and evolving. The equilibrium between form and function is in a perpetual state of flux; the organization seeking to remain relevant and competitive constantly changes its structure and strategy to adapt to changes in its environment.

Michael Hammer and James Champy in their ground breaking work on business process reengineering showed different companies who at different times had to alter the structure and processes within their organizations in order for them to be more responsive to their environment and to become competitive in their service and product offering. To put it in their own words, “once a real work process is reengineered, the shape of the organizational structure required to perform the work will become apparent”. Hammer & Champy (1993:41). Nortel Networks epitomizes the metamorphosis that a company goes through in response to changes in the competitive landscape. Nortel Networks had to rationalize manufacturing operations globally from 23 manufacturing sites around the world to about seven. The focus changed from a product centric approach to a focus on process and supply chain integration for the sake of the customer. Higher quality expectation was demanded of employees and the arrangement and nature of work itself was significantly altered with employees encouraged to work in different roles and cross functional improvement teams. McAdam, R & McCormack, D (2001:4). All these attributed to a radical change in the organizational framework and structure of Nortel Networks.

Companies are also evolving global strategies in response to their hypercompetitive environment that involves thinking in an integrated way about all aspects of their business and their suppliers, production sites, markets and competition, McAdam, R & McCormack, D (2001:6), this integrated approach to business requires new ways of doing things- new processes as well as new structures to suit their environment and give life to the strategic thrust of the organization. BP and Nokia were two other companies who were both successful in the 1990s due to the fact that they evolved organizational models that were suited to the environment wherein they operated and adapted to the strategy the companies pursued. John Roberts (2004:30). BP employed the principle of subsidiarity in which case power was given to those closest to the point of decision making and a peer group structure was also implemented to serve as a control and performance management board.

The fact remains that organizations adopt different strategies based on the changes in their environment, the adoption of a new strategy will consequently result in work processed being carried out in different ways from the way of the fact and from the new processes and style of getting work done, emanates a new and different organization.

References
1. There are three fundamental considerations a firm has to pay attention to, to survive and remain profitable, they are: efficiency, innovation and adaptability Child, J (2005: 378) and efficiency is perhaps the most critical of the three, the most constant need of the organization so to speak and the strength of conventional organizations is in their efficiency and we can safely conclude that conventional organizations are structured for efficiency. Child, J (2005: 379).

Innovation is another critical strategic consideration for the success of an organization and it will appear that new forms of organizations support innovation more than conventional forms but we need to note that innovation has two components: exploration and exploitation. Child, J (2005: 380). Exploration is the search and generation of new knowledge while exploitation is the application of knowledge and the commercialization of such new knowledge. Organizations structured to explore knowledge such as Bell Laboratories of the AT&T and Xerox’s PARC, have not made money from all the wonderful and great innovations that emanated from the organizations mainly because they were not designed to exploit the innovations generated. Roberts, J (2004: 254). The exploitation of knowledge requires a focus on current realities with the energies of the organization aimed at effectiveness and execution of the idea and this requires a structured organization with clearly defined roles and responsibilities and reporting structure. Roberts, J (2004: 255). This is another reason for the persistence of conventional organizations.

The third consideration for organizational success is adaptability, which is the ability of the firm to be responsive to changes within its environment and adjust to new circumstances. This requires rapid communication of new information and a structure that will allow the firm to act and respond to that information Child, J (2005: 381). Adaptability breeds confusion and chaos without a structure in place delegating authorities, a system specifying actions to be taken in response to new developments or procedures as to the dissemination of information.

Despite postulations and practice of new organizational forms, it is clear that the conventional forms of organizations will continue to persist for reasons of efficiencies, exploitation of innovation and effective adaptation. Though I must say that I am a great believer in novelty and I believe that the new forms of organization will mature and evolve to provide a means to handle these issues but in the meantime conventional organizations are better structured to provide a framework for these important organizational considerations.

References:
1. They did not leave your eyes misty, they did not leave your soul yearning. The vocals did not come out as clearly and strongly.

They did not really appeal to the Love inside your heart and they did not inspire as Bebe does.

I was deflated.

I consoled myself and said to myself, a man cannot always be at the top of his game. A man cannot always remain in the highland of imagination, faith and hope. Every once in a while, he must descend into the real world. Then I assured myself that it would only be a matter of time before I hear again from this Bard and versifying Songster, that he would again do what he had always done; and now I am waiting patiently for another Miracle.

I guess Brother Benjamin is working on another project and that is why I took time out to write this, if perchance he would read it, so he would know that his music is Life to some of us and that what we care for are songs such as Addictive love, Stay with me, These what Abouts, Love is the reason, This song, Did you know, With all of my heart, My heart, Tonight tonight etc.

We appreciate any other variety but he must remain in the mainstream of what I think is his calling. Infact, a few of the songs on the last album are brilliant masterpieces but the tenor of the whole album just wasn’t Bebe.

This is not a critique, this is an urgent and fervent plea! By staying true to what we are, we become true to God and we bring more of God to the world.
